The actual process of joining a friend is pretty simple on PlayStation, Xbox, and Windows PC, though it helps if everyone has finished loading into Online first. You will usually find that a friend's open session is the quickest way to get a group moving.
Check your PC setup first
Windows PC players should take a minute to confirm that BattlEye is running before trying to enter an Online lobby. Rockstar added BattlEye to GTA Online on September 17, 2024, as part of its effort to monitor the game environment. When it is switched off, a message may appear saying that BattlEye is required for GTA Online and that Grand Theft Auto V needs to be restarted. Do not keep clicking through menus hoping it will sort itself out. Close the game, reopen it, and check the Rockstar Games Launcher settings if the warning comes back.
Make sure GTA V and the Rockstar Games Launcher are fully updated.
Restart the game after changing BattlEye settings.
Check that your friend is marked as online before searching for their session.
Join through the Online menu
Once you are in GTA Online, bring up the pause menu and move across to the Online tab. This is where the session tools live, along with matchmaking choices and player-related options. Open the friends section, look for the person you want to meet, then select the option to join their current session. If their lobby has space and its privacy settings allow it, the game will load you into the same world. It can take a short while, especially if their session is busy. That is normal, so give the loading screen a moment rather than backing out too soon.
Use invitations when the menu route is awkward
A direct invite is handy when your friend is in an invite-only session or when the friends list is being slow. They can send one through Rockstar Games Social Club, and you will see a notification appear while you are in-game. On PC, press Tab to open the invitation prompt, then press Enter to accept it. Console players can follow the button prompt shown on-screen. Steam Deck and Linux users should bear in mind that current compatibility limits keep GTA Online unavailable there, leaving Story Mode as the playable option. Once everyone is connected,
